Teaching Philosophy Statement

I believe that learning science is often more intimidating than it needs to be. I have taught 7th and 8th grade biology, chemistry, and physics as well as higher level courses including IGCSE Chemistry, AS-Level Chemistry, AP Chemistry, honors biology, and AS-Level Biology. Through teaching such a broad range of curriculum, I have found that the students experience confusion when they can not visualize and apply the concepts. Fear of failure also becomes very apparent while teaching science because students know that getting high marks on external exams can get them into top universities.

Although it is often a struggle getting Chinese students to relax in class, I have found integrating creativity has helped them feel secure in trying. This confidence has extended into my student’s testing skills, and I feel very proud watching my students travel abroad and exhibit the courage to participate in classrooms despite English being their second language.

Teaching mutual respect, courage, and kindness while teaching science is my daily goal.

Below are some pictures of my students as I left my last school in Beijing to move to a new adventure in Wuhan. When I began teaching these students two years before, they were largely shy and afraid of failing. When I left they showered me with small gifts, notes, confidence, and I know that we both changed each other’s lives.
